Once you have a little more wiggle room in your budget, it’s time to check in and update and replace some gear. Doing so gives you peace of mind about the quality of equipment you are providing for your members to use, and will also demonstrate you care about your clients, which again, affects your retention rate.
Much like maintaining your gear, doing a regular audit and making a list of gear to clean, service or replace will help keep you organised and up to date with what needs attention.
As you are teaching group classes or PT monitor how equipment is functioning in class – this will help you gauge how the equipment is performing. If you are more behind the scenes and not ‘on the floor’ on a regular basis, ask your staff to monitor gear during its use and report any equipment malfunctions.
Consider providing a secondary form for staff to fill out when they believe equipment needs to be serviced or replaced. You will then be able to review it and act accordingly.
When it comes to updating gear, once you’ve bought all the essentials you’ll need to run the gym day to day, you'll now have the budget to purchase replacement gear for the equipment that isn’t making the cut anymore or specialty equipment to give your gym a bit more flavour.
Extra dumbbell weights, accessories for the rig such as wallball targets, as well as soft plyo boxes and barbells more suited for strength and conditioning work are all items you can consider buying. These will ultimately help round out your program and improve your clients training experience.
If you continually monitor and service the equipment you buy, it will be unnecessary regularly replace it. If you can take care of the gear you have purchased, you will be able to direct your business funds into more avenues of the business – like upgrading the type and amount of equipment you already have so you can see that retention rate climb.
Like always, if you ever have questions or concerns about your gym or the equipment you’re are using, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’ll take care of it for you.
