Your Long-Term Athletic Journey

How to Train Smarter Today for a Healthier, Stronger Tomorrow

As a young athlete, it’s easy to focus on what’s right in front of you—the next training session, the next competition, the next personal best. But the best athletes, and the healthiest ones, think beyond today’s workout. They focus on the big picture: their long-term athletic journey.

At the core of this approach is something called Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD). It’s a framework that helps athletes grow, perform, and thrive—not just for the next competition, but for life.

What is LTAD?

Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) is a science-backed system designed to guide athletes through different stages of growth and athletic development.
It’s about doing the right training at the right time, based on where you are in your physical and biological development—not just your age or current ability.

The goal of LTAD is to:

  • Help you maximize your athletic potential

  • Reduce your risk of injury

  • Build a lifelong love for sport and physical activity

The Stages of LTAD Relevant to You

Between the ages of 15 and 20, most athletes fall into two key stages:

  1. Train to Train

    • Focuses on building the foundation: aerobic capacity, strength, and movement skills

    • Introduces more structured training, but still with an emphasis on skill development and variety

  2. Train to Compete

    • Increases the focus on sport-specific skills and competitive experience

    • Requires more advanced training methods and a deeper understanding of recovery and mental preparation

Understanding which stage you’re in allows you and your coaches to design a program that aligns with your needs, maturity level, and goals.

Why LTAD Matters

  • Gradual skill development: LTAD promotes a steady progression of skills and fitness, avoiding burnout or overtraining.

  • Biological maturity over age: Everyone grows at different rates. LTAD takes into account whether your body is ready to handle certain types of training.

  • Focus on the long game: It’s not just about creating elite athletes—it’s about helping you enjoy sports for life. Whether you continue to compete at a high level or stay active for fun, the habits you build now will last a lifetime.

Practical Tips for Following LTAD Principles

  • Don’t rush. Gradual increases in training load and intensity are safer and more effective.

  • Stay consistent with fundamental movement patterns—squat, hinge, push, pull, and rotate.

  • Play multiple sports or vary your training to build well-rounded athletic ability.

  • Prioritize recovery, rest, and nutrition just as much as training.

  • Work with coaches who understand your unique development and can adjust your program accordingly.
